On Saturday December 10th, the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum and the Town of Sedalia hosted our Inaugural Christmas Tree Lighting event, “Christmas in Sedalia.” With vendors and performances throughout the night and the lighting of a 30-foot Christmas tree in front of Kimball Hall, the event was a success.

“Christmas in Sedalia” has historical roots with the Palmer Memorial Institute. Every December before students went home for Christmas Break, Palmer hosted its annual Candlelight Christmas Program in the Alice Freeman Palmer Building. The Christmas program was usually a concert where the Sedalia Singers (a talented group of student and community musicians and singers that performed at venues and schools around the country- including the White House) and other choir groups would perform songs such as “Joy to the World” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.”

This year, the tradition of holiday music floating across Palmer’s campus was commemorated with musical performances from Eastern Guilford High School, Ragsdale High School, Kidz Notes and the Greensboro Choral Society.

Our staff would like to take a moment to thank those who made this program possible. First, we would like to thank the Town of Sedalia. Our site is grateful for the continued support of the Town of Sedalia. This program would not have been possible without their collaboration.

Next is a HUGE thank you to our talented team of Craftsmen with North Carolina Historic Sites. The craftsmen made it possible for us to put up the tree, mount and display large decorations, and they ensured that our campus was ready for our program. We are truly appreciative for all your hard work and help.

We’d also like to thank the Historic Sites staff members and Town of Sedalia affiliates who helped us decorate the grounds on December 1st! Without them, our grounds would not look nearly as festive and happy as they do, so thank you all so much!

Thank you to Four Seasons Town Centre in Greensboro for the tree and the decorations. This program would not have been possible at all without their generous donation and for that we are so thankful.

Special thanks to Tracey Allen with the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and Transformation Quest Academy for helping secure vendors for our Holiday Bazaar. The market would not have been possible without her! And thank you to our vendors for hosting a wonderful market experience for our visitors.

Thank you to all the performers who came out and participated as well as the volunteers who donated their time to help us.

And lastly we would like to thank all of our guests who came out and made “Christmas in Sedalia” a success! We hope you had a wonderful time and we hope to see you again real soon!
